9 AMAZING IDEAS FOR THAT SPARE ROOM IN YOUR HOUSE
Many of us have a spare room in our house that we utilise as a “storage room” (aka junk room). But there are so many other ways families can use this space. Here we share 9 amazing ideas for that extra room:
This may seem obvious but a guest bedroom is often overlooked. If you have family or friends that live interstate or overseas or are often hosting people who stay overnight, a guest bedroom makes perfect sense. You can pick up furniture that is not too expensive and dress it up with accessories to give it a homely feel. It means you avoid having to convert the sofa or having a blow up mattress in the middle of the living room every time someone stays over.
WALK IN ROBE
For those with a love of all things fashion, one walk in robe is never enough. Imagine being able to convert a whole room into your personal dressing room complete with hanging space and display shelves for your shoes, handbags and jewellery. With the addition of an ottoman or chaise lounge, it could be a very luxurious space.
Perhaps not as luxurious as the previous suggestion, but wouldn’t it be great to have a room for all your ironing needs? No more seeing clothes piled on the lounge or dining room table – it could all be confined to the one room. A seamless production line for sorting, folding and ironing and when you don’t get to it, you can just close the door and visitors will be none the wiser.
Anyone with children knows that toys seem to multiply all the time until they seemingly take over the whole house. A room dedicated to play is a great solution. You can add baskets for their toys, a little bookshelf for their books and child size furniture for them to sit and watch TV or draw and play to their heart’s content. You can be as creative as you like. Perhaps even paint an entire wall out of chalkboard paint so they can draw all over it. So much fun and it will save your sanity!
So many of us now run businesses from home, or take work home to do. If you have children, they also need a space to do their homework. Turning a spare room into a home office is a great idea. Have a freestanding desk or get a cabinet maker to install a desk and shelves. It saves having work spread all over the kitchen bench and allows you to have everything you need, including a computer and printer, at your fingertips. A quiet space to think and work is more productive than trying to get things done in the middle of family chaos.
If you don’t require an actual work space but love to read, why not convert your empty room into a library? You could have shelves with all your favourite books, decorate the room with favourite items, lay down a warm rug and install a comfy chair. Imagine sipping tea (or maybe a wine) curled up with your favourite book in your own private library. Bliss!
For those into fitness, imagine not having to rush to a gym early in the morning or after work. Imagine being able to work out in the comfort of your own home. You could fill a room with as much or as little gym equipment as you like. If your budget doesn’t allow for much, a treadmill, exercise mat and ball and perhaps some weights would be perfect. Crank up the music and get moving!
MINI BAR/GAMES ROOM
If you’re a lover of fine wine or well aged scotch, how about a mini bar? A room that you could sit in and shoot the breeze with mates while enjoying your drink of choice. You could even step it up and turn it into a games room with a pool table. Install a TV for all the weekend sports and make it the room everyone wants to hang out in.
Whether it is craft, painting, sewing, photography or any other hobby, a spare room is a chance to indulge in everything you love. Deck it out to suit your hobby and create the ultimate escape room. It’s the place you’ll always want to be because it’s where you get to relax and indulge in whatever your passion is. Be creative and make it your own!
What do you want to turn your spare room into? The choice is all yours – so get moving and clear out those unused rooms.
